Apart from sprawling shopping malls, sparkling clean environs and amazing infrastructure, what makes Singapore a tourist's first stop in a journey across Asia, is its wonderful amalgamation of tastes from around the region. While the word 'tastes' here can have many figurative meanings, starting from costumes to traditions to languages - all of them equally apt to describe this wonderful island city-country, the literal meaning is of particular interest to me.
Singapore is truly a food lover's paradise. Be it the Chinese mee pok (flat noodles with minced meat and fish balls) or the Malay rotiprata or the very ingenious take on barbecued meat called satay (derived from the Tamil word sathai meaning 'flesh') every part of the island is teeming with delectables. Whether you have a very versatile palette or a very conservative one, you are likely to find something that suits your taste.
This blog intends to be a ready-reckoner to tourists as well as newly arrived residents. It will de-mystify the various dishes typical to the place as well as serve as a guide to some of the better places to eat in - from restraurants to the ubiquitous 'hawker centers'. In the process it may serve to remind some Singaporean of some long forgotten place she used to frequent as a kid. So, bon apetit!
